Sebouh Apkarian
Artistic Director and Conductor

Maestro Sebouh Apkarian was born in Cyprus.For more than 50 years and still continuing, he is a composer, conductor, painter and educator. He founded the Armenian radio program at the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, where he presented various programs for 46 years.
After graduating form the Melkonian Educational Institute, Nicosia, Cyprus, he continued his studies in Paris.
As an opera singer, he has given recitals in Nicosia, Athens, Beirut, Aleppo, Cairo and Paris.
He has also composed many songs,choral works, chamber music, oratories, cantatas, symphonic suites and musical caricatures.
Many of these compositions were played in Tokyo, Paris, Cyprus, Beirut and the USA and won prizes.

After graduating from the Melkonian Educational Institute he got his degrees, BS from Texas A & M , and MS and PHD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southern California by 1985. After teaching at various universities he settled at the Arizona University where he  is  Interim Department Head in 2008. He has received numerous honors and awards and is the author of many publications and abstracts.

John Guevherian

Born in Addis-Ababa, he is the grandson of Rev. Hovhannes Guevherian, the first Pastor of Armenians in Ethiopia (1877–1957). He attended the renowned Melkonian Educational Institute from 1962-1967. He has obtained his degree in Architecture in 1973, with honors, at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon.
Mr. Guevherian is actively involved in the Armenian community life in Cyprus.  He has designed and supervised the construction of the monument for the victims of the Armenian Genocide which was erected at the Armenian churchyard in Nicosia in 1990

Hakob Hakobian (Hakobyan)

(Born 1923, Egypt) is a modern Armenian painter. He has awarded by the honorary title of People's Artist of the Armenian SSR and a State Prize of the Armenia titles. He studied at the Melkonian in Cyprus and Acade'mie de la Grande Chaumiere. His early works are small size oils: one figure compositions in interiors and still life works. Hakobyan moved to his historical homeland, Armenia, from Egypt in 1962, and his new world became the native landscape. Hakobian made several exhibitions in Yerevan, Moscow and other cities.

Manoug Kalpakdjian

Originally from Alexandria-Egypt, Manoug Kalpakdjian graduated from class of 1970 (ENTATSAVARD) & class of 1972 (SHERCHANAVARD). He was principle of Bogosian Armenian School in Alexandria (EGYPT) from 1976 to 1990. Boghosian School has a rich history and many famous armenians served there like Nicole Aghpalian ,Levon Chant and others. Main benifactor of school was Boghos Be Bey Youssoufian, the great uncle of Boghos Nubar (Foupnder OF AGBU). It was founded in MID-1800s. Manoug has been the longest serving principle. Boghosian School also includes the "MELKONIAN KINDERGARTEN", which was our Parerar Garabed Melkonian's gift to the comunity.
Mr. Kalpakdjian, a graduate of Yerevan University, Armenian Studies (Hayakidagan), was also a beloved & highly respected teacher at the school. Last but not least, he was a wise volunteer " hanraeen kordzich ", very active in the community 'till the last day of his short life.
Vartkes Kourouyan

After attending the Melkonian Education Institute and a Bachelors Degree from the American University of Beirut Lebanon, Mr. Vartkes Kourouyan came back to the Melkonian School and served in the capacity of administrator and teacher until he moved to the United States. With a Master's Degree and Credential in Educational Administration and Supervision from California State University, Northridge, in 1986 he became the principal of TCA Arshag Dickranian School in Hollywood.
 He recently joined the rank of esteemed recipients of the Sts. Sahag and Mesrob Medal - granted by His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians. A veteran of Armenian education, he dedicated his life in the education and administration of Armenian Schools and Armenian students.

Rev. Fr. Untzag Nalbandian

After four years studying at the Melkonian Institute in Cyprus from 1967 to 1971, he went to Armenia. After graduating Seminary he went to France. He enrolled in Niagara University in New York,  and within six months of his arrival in the United States he became a priest. Rev Nalbandian earned a Master's degree in religious studies in the US.

Haygashen Ouzounian

For over fifty years, he was a leader in the Armenian national, ecclesiastical, political and communal life in the Diaspora. He received his secondary education at the Melkonian Educational Institute in 1938.
A founding member of the Tekeyan Cultural Association, a member of the ADL Central Committee from 1947 to 2003. Elected Treasurer of the Central Board of AGBU worldwide in 1974 and later was appointed Vice President of the European Section.
in 1990, he was awarded the “St. Gregory the Illuminator” medal and ecclesiastical Encyclical. In 1991 he was honored with the AGBU Alex Manoogian award to him by President Robert Kocharian of Armenia.
He was a literary author, committed to the Armenian community who believed passionately in the Armenian spirit.
Gerald Papasian

Mr. Gerald Papasian was born in Egypt. After graduating the Melkonian Educational Institute, he continued his studies in acting, theater and movies in Armenia, United States and London. Currently residing in France, Mr. Gerald Papasian; actor, director, producer, writer and director of Tigran Chouhajian Research Center in Paris, recieved the "Movses Khorenatsi" Medal of Honor in Yerevan, Armenia.
Haig Sarkisian

Mr. Haig Sarkisian was born in Egypt. He graduated the Melkonian Educational Institute in 1975. After Melkonian he continued his studies in music in Yerevan, Armenia. He is know the principal of Tebrotzassere School in Paris, France.
Benon Sevan

Benon Vahe Sevan, born in Cyprus and educated at the prestigious Melkonian Educational Institute, obtained a BA in History and Philosophy at Columbia College, New York, and a degree from the School of International and Public Affairs form Columbia College.
He joined the United Nations in 1965. From 1982 to March 1988 he was Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Council. In April 1988 he was appointed director and senior political advisor to the Secretary-General's representative on the Afghan conflict. In January  1991 the Secretary-General appointed him to head the Office coordinating humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. In July 1992 he was named Assistant Secretary-General in the UN Department of Political Affairs. Mr. Benon Sevan has also been a member of the Central Board of the AGBU.

Vartan Tashdjian

Mr. Tashdjian studied at the Melkonian Educational Institute. In 1966 he came back as a teacher for 9 years. For another 27 years, he was director of the Nareg Armenian Schools System. An
actor, director, decorator and founder of a theatrical group, he was a lyric tenor soloist in various choirs. He  made numerous appearances as a lecturer on painting, art, culture and other topics. Author of many literary works, letters, lectures and studies, he recently published a book containing the keynote speeches and commencement addresses of his educational career.
As an artist, Vartan has presented more than 42 solo exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad with phenomenal success.
His works can be found at the Contemporary Art Gallery of Cyprus and numerous Galleries and private collections all over the world. Mr. Vartan Tashdjian has been honored by The President of the Republic of Cyprus H.E. Mr. Glafkos Clerides and was decorated with the Medal of St. Mesrob Mashdotz.

Sarkis Tossounian

Graduate from Melkonain 1973, Sarkis Tossounian, originally from Alexandria - Egypt, is a famous sculptor. He could be  the only melkoniantsi sculptor.
